Directed search with multi-vacancy firms

چکیده

This paper studies how firm size, firm growth, and market structure affect matching between workers and firms, and resulting levels of employment, wages, and output. Building on the directed search literature, I construct and analyze a framework in which both the number of firms and the distribution of vacancies across firms are determined endogenously, wages play an allocative role in the matching process, and the frictions inherent in this process derive from the equilibrium behavior of workers and firms. The model generates a rich set of testable implications for cross-sectional variation in matching efficiency, as well as the dynamic behavior of vacancies and unemployment. Moreover, allowing for ex-ante heterogeneity across firms, I show that the model can easily and naturally generate the relationship between firm size, wages, profitability, and hiring that is observed in the data.

Explorer Directed search with multiple job applications

We develop an equilibrium directed search model of the labor market where workers can simultaneously apply for multiple jobs. Our main theoretical contribution is to integrate the portfolio choice problem faced by workers into an equilibrium framework. All equilibria of our model exhibit wage dispersion. Consistent with stylized facts, the density of wages is decreasing and higher wage firms re...

Firm and Industrial Dynamics Over the Business Cycles

This dissertation consists of three essays. In Chapter 1, we proposes a dynamic multi-sector production network model in which firms receive news on the future product-specific demand of a representative household. Since production takes time and firms in the production sectors are connected via input-output links, news on the future final demand of an individual product changes firms' forecast...

Wages and Employment Persistence with Multi-worker Firms

We present a generalization of the standard random-search model of unemployment in which firms hire multiple workers and in which the hiring process is time-consuming as well as costly. We follow Stole and Zwiebel (1996a,b) and assume that wages are determined by continuous bargaining between the firm and its employees. This generates a non-trivial dispersion of firm sizes; when firms’ producti...
